Cure Golf Chipping Yips with This Great Tutorial

There might not be anything more frustrating in golf than the yips. Whether they get you on the putting green, off the tee, or with your chipping, the yips are a phenomenon that no golfers wishes to experience. The yips is usually defined as nerves taking over your stroke just before you hit the ball, leading to all kinds of poor shots. In order to continue on a path toward better golf, you will need to solve this issue quickly before it gets farther into your head and requires even more work to resolve.

For golfers who are currently afflicted with the chipping yips, the following tips may be of great assistance –

  • Stop choking down on the club. The farther you choke down on your wedge before hitting a chip shot, the lighter the club will feel in your hands. While this isn’t always a bad thing, it is definitely trouble when you are dealing with the yips. If you can make the club feel heavier, you will have an easier time making a rhythmic stroke and not getting the yips right before impact. Try hitting your chip shots while holding the club all the way up at the top of the grip and see how that helps your yip problems.
  • Close your eyes for practice. The visual component of the yips cannot be overstated. As your club gets close to the ball, your mind gets nervous and you react by twitching with your hands. To counteract this problem, work on hitting some practice chip shots with your eyes closed. They can just be simple chip shots of a few yards, and make sure you are practicing in a safe area where an errant chip won’t hit something or someone. After hitting a few chips with your eyes closed, open them back up and see how you can do.
  • Lean to the left. This is good advice (for right handed golfers) whether you have the yips or not. You want to hit slightly down into the ball when you are chipping, so leaning to your left at address is a great way to pre-program that downward strike. Try to get about 60% of your weight onto your left foot at address, and then hit the chip like normal. Just this minor adjustment could be all it takes to get the yips out of your mind and out of your chipping game for good.
